Keeping Tabs On Business Research Data Sources at UConn & Beyond
Subject
Description
Business instructors and students require a wide range of data services as data is a central component of business education. Government data is part of this critical resource for instructors. It may be publicly available, but many instructors note that students often have difficulties finding, accessing, and using it. In addition, access to data resources is the lifeline of business researchers looking to publish. Researchers are asking business librarians to provide data with more granularity. Many librarians support business research at our institutions. Business resources are constantly evolving, so we can no longer rely on sheer memory work. With every new relevant data source encountered, I added them to this open-source knowledge base of business research data. I briefly documented these data sources, capturing how they apply to business researchers. I used the Notion platform because it allows simple linking between records. [https://s.uconn.edu/b-research-data-kb]. The university library and business librarian are heavily involved in acquiring business data resources. The business school could be responsible for funding these resources. Librarians can also play a role in "one-off data purchases" paid for by research funds. This knowledge base supports my work as the liaison librarian to the UConn School of Business. Also, it benefits researchers from other disciplines (e.g., humanities, social sciences) using business research data. Business researchers can benefit from more inputs from non-traditional data sources (e.g., linguistics, public safety, satellite imagery). You can develop such a working project using similar tools like Notion and Airtable. For example, I started a similar list of student competitions (including accelerators, hackathons, incubators, and calls for papers) for UConn business graduate students and student entrepreneurs.
